White Ceramic Teacup With Saucer Near Two Books Above Gray Floral Textile

Welcome to the latest update from Liz and the YCAA Book Club!

Several of us met up at Westlands Lounge for conversation. Books were top of the agenda as usual! I have been remiss in reporting on the February choices and the March discussions as I had slipped on black ice breaking my right arm and shoulder, so am currently relying on an often-uncooperative left hand for typing. However, we plod on!

February and March Picks

The first book we chose for February was ‘The Secret Diaries of Charles Ignatius Sancho‘ by Paterson Joseph. Paterson came to the Yeovil Literary Festival and just listening to his voice telling the passion and research behind this historical novel persuaded us that it is a significant read. Some listened to the audible version. I felt I was living the historical times and events with the use of a diary delivering a story. Recommended.

Our second treat was Elif Shafak’s ‘The Island of Missing Trees‘. Another thoughtful read some of us enjoyed.

Out of my predicament I have needed to use Kindle for the many hours I have spent reading. Needing page-turning historical romance with excellent settings and character inhabiting a brilliant story, I discovered two authors new to me. Kayte Nunn, an Australian writer, and Rhys Bowen. I really enjoyed some of their novels.

Other readers recommended:

  • Three Sisters‘ by Heather Norris
  • A Study in Murder‘ by Robert Ryan
  • Cloud Cuckoo Land‘ by Anthony Duerr
  • Someone Else’s Shoes‘ by Jojo Moyes
  • Dominion‘ by C J Sansom
  • The Promise‘ by Damon Galgut

And what have we selected to read this month?

A definite choice recommended by Bob is Neil Gaiman’s ‘The Ocean at the End of the Lane‘. ‘The Twyford Code‘, a Janice Hallett novel, was highly recommended by Sandra. Two definitely different reads for us but widening our literary horizons by reading genres new to us. It’s what a book group does so magnificently.

Next Meeting

We usually meet on the second Tuesday in the month, but our APRIL meeting will be a week later due to Easter holidays.

Next book group meeting is at 12 noon on Tuesday 18th April in the Westlands Entertainment Venue Lounge.

Keep smiling!
